What is Teak oil?

Good quality Teak oil that is produced to be used for both teak garden furniture and boat decking and is made from 4 ingredients.

Tung oil

tung tree seeds

Tung oil is extracted from the seeds of the Tung tree. Tung oil is used in teak oil for two reasons; it’s drying qualities and its colour. When Tung oil is exposed to the air it hardens and dries quickly this is ideal for use on teak garden furniture as it will ensure that, your bench for example, becomes rigid and strong very quickly. Tung oil gives teak wood a wet look with a golden tint that makes the grains and natural colours of the teak come to life.

Linseed oil

flax plant seeds

Linseed oil is similar to Tung oil in being that it is used for its drying and colour enhancing qualities. Linseed is the oil that is extracted from the seeds of the Flax plant. This oil is slow drying and will soak into the teak wood not just sit on the surface making your teak incredibly durable. The oil also helps to give your teak furniture a glossy surface that enhances the colours of the wood.

Flax plant from which the seeds are extracted pictured to the left.

Good quality teak oil should always contain a high Glycerine content; this will help protect your teak wood by removing water from the air around your furniture. Predominately used in the preservation of fruit and in soap making, Glycerine also has fantastic antiseptic qualities which will protect against disease and mildew.

Mineral spirits

Mineral spirits are used for two reasons, to thin the teak oil for easy application to teak wood and also for its cleaning properties.

A very warm welcome to all our clients, friends and future customers.

For once we have all enjoyed a pleasant, warm and mostly dry Summer.  I see the Hawthorn and Rose Hips are abundant as I drive around our green and pleasant land.  A sign of a harsh Winter, maybe.  Anyone feeling their seaweed, looking at the Pine Cones?  Speaking of cones I was given the largest cone I have ever seen, (gigantic is not the word to describe this monster) from one of our clients.  I understand they have to remove them to avoid the falling ones killing somebody.  We are hoping the seeds might germinate and create little monster trees – that said I will never see this happen in my lifetime.  Over to my sons Adam and Ben to manage the project.

Grass is cut, Koi are still growing, The trotters are in the freezer, our Jacob Sheep have proved to be, as my dad once put it “messy and troublesome beasts” polite version!! Still we have Charlie our three week old baby ram to show for the efforts. Moorhens have hatched and raised their family, the foxes are decimating our chickens, our Buzzards are searching the newly mown field likewise the Barn Owls and Kestrels.  The demon killer of the garden ( Sparrowhawk ) still flashes through the trees grabbing the hapless sparrows that seem never to know what actually hit them.

We have this year been busier than over the past few, a sign I hope for us all that things are starting to improve?  Thank you for the loyalty you wonderful people out there offer.  We never take that for granted and as always strive to exceed your expectations and meet every requirement. Integrity, care and appreciation still are in my company, alive and kicking.

If you are still, and I am sure you are, gardening and fancy a last minute special purchase of some of the very finest TEAK, OAK, IROKO or SWEET CHESTNUT garden furniture money can buy give us a call.  Sorry to mention it but – Christmas is not that far away.  You can start saving up for a really special armchair for the old man, a cuddly companion set for you both or a superbly comfortable bench to place in your special spot in the garden.  A handmade Childs Armchair or Bench scaled perfectly. Add a message from Grandparents. Kept indoors these little jewels will last for hundreds of years and can be passed from generation to generation.

Can we please start a little ‘TRADITIONAL’ recipe club?  My mum always used to make a wonderful 1” thick Shortbread, Piccalilli to die for, my dad, Horseradish that made you cry just walking into the room whilst it was being grated on the kitchen table and so many more. Ginger Beer a living thing that looked like something from Quatermass on the kitchen windowsill. Pickled eggs that do not look either anaemic or as brown as conkers.  Jamie Oliver and High Fearnley-Whittingstall what’s his name seem, among others to try to sort these traditional dishes so come on folks we have some time before the festive season kicks in let’s create a few jars of real quality pickles to go with our British Cheeses.

As a reward the top 5 recipes each week will receive a Magic bottle holder with my compliments. This will get your friends talking around the table or place on the windowsill as a Red Wine warmer.

I apologise for this great gap since my last ramblings you decide more or less? Have a great late Summer, go gather the fruits of Autumn and most importantly Laugh daily, Smile often and speak to other people kindly, who knows they might just smile and answer you back.

Warm regards.

Why is Teak Wood Water Resistant?

Teak wood is the best wood to use for quality garden furniture because of its natural teak oil and water resistance even if left outside.  Teak wood contains natural oils which protect the tree against pests, rot and warping making it the perfect choice for long lasting teak garden furniture.

Teak wood is historically used in boat building as the Teak contains natural Teak oil just below the surface, is naturally none slip and requires no maintenance other than cleaning. Teak garden manufactures such as ourselves love to work with good quality Teak wood to produce garden furniture which will have a lifespan of at least 70 years, ideal for heavy usage in street and park furniture and beautiful original designs for gardens.

Garden Furniture made from Grade A Teak is widely known to be the most durable and maintenance free outdoor furniture available.

If you like the maintenance free option read below.

Good quality Teak Garden Furniture requires nothing more than the occasional clean with warm soapy water and a capful of bleach. For intensive cleaning of Teak please use a power washer to clean away heavily soiled areas to give your furniture a new lease of life

If you have Teak Oiled furniture read below:                                                                     2014-05-21 07.21.32

Complete the cleaning process as advised above. Allow your Teak Garden Furniture to thoroughly dry in the sun before using a Teak Oil with a high glycerine to add extra oils into your bench. Teak Garden Furniture recommends oiling your bench 2-3 times a year if you opt to start Teak Oiling your garden furniture.

As specialists in luxury Teak Garden Furniture we always advise not to Oil your furniture as Teak Oil dries the natural oils found in the Teak wood and your furniture will become dependent on routine re oiling to maintain its oil content.

After one year:

It’s almost like I’ve been here forever. I’ve settled in and been appreciated many times offering a comfortable seat when the evening is drawing in. I’m starting to age and go a little grey but i still consider myself very youthful.

DSC 0250

After six years:

My owners can’t believe how fresh I still look. I’m exceedingly strong and even after multiple storms I haven’t moved an inch from where I was originally placed in the garden.

After 15 years:

I’m starting to look a little weathered as we all do over time. fortunately my owners know a magic trick and give me a facelift by using a power washer on me, I can’t believe I look exactly like I did 15 years ago when I was created with care. I have a feeling I’m going to be around for a very long time.

Memorial Benches

When choosing a Memorial Bench you will always have complete control of how you would like your bench to be. We believe in the personal touches, if you have made the decision to buy a Memorial Bench as a tribute to a loved one you will have complete control of how your bench will look when it is finished.

Can’t find exactly what you’re looking for?

Your bench should reflect the person that youa rere wanting to pay tribute to. If you have been searching for the perfect bench but just can’t seem to find it let us help you. If you have seen one of our benches that you like but you would prefer if it was adapted slightly, we can do that for you. As we hand make our benches we have the ability to create just about anything that you desire.

Personalised Touches

Now you have chosen the style of bench that you and your family would like, you may also want to consider what type of wood you would like your bench to be created from. As standard we offer a choice of Teak, Oak or Iroko. However if you have a piece of wood that you would like to be added to the bench we can also do that for you. The benches range from 2 seaters up to 5 seaters, and can either be designed for you to sit up right or relax into.

Want a bench that stands out?

Teak and Oak benches are traditional and rustic colours that can be left alone to age gracefully. However if you want to stand out from the rest you can opt to have your bench painted in any colour you require, be it a vintage white or even bright pink, the choices are endless if you opt for an Iroko tribute bench.

I want a bench with a message

There are two options to show your message to the rest of the world. You can either choose to have you message engraved into the bench, either on the top rail or bottom rail. However if the message you want to be shown is slightly more wordy, opting for a Brass plaque may be the better option.

Be in control of what you want and call us today to discuss: 01429 890808

What is Teak?

Teak is a tropical hardwood that is found extensively in South East Asia, it is one of the most popular woods for furniture making. Natural beauty and elegance are the two basic reasons for such popularity.

Seen some real bargains out there... whats the catch?

The catch is that the furniture you are buying is grade C Teak. If the price of the furniture is too good to be true, then there is a reason for it. Some hide the grade by using chemicals on the timber and others don't even bother doing that assuming you won't know the difference anyway. Grade A Teak furniture is expensive to buy.  As an example, if you have seen a 8 seater Teak garden furniture set for under £1500 i can guarantee the set is made from Grade C Teak. Yes it will look fine for the first year but after that you will start seeing the inherent problems with such sets as they rear their ugly heads, rickerty, weak joints, warped tabletops and rot.

But they have some great reviews online, their furniture can't be that bad?

9/10 reviews are given immediately after the purchase and not a year later. If you could go back to these people who buy on ebay or Amazon  and ask how their £700 8 seater Teak garden set is doing a year after they bought it and the answer will be completely different.

So how do i know who to try and buy from?

That depends on what you really want. If you want a real piece of furniture which you will be able to pass on to your children/ grandchildren then the only way to be sure is to stick with the main manufacturers in the Uk. We.  for example offer a 15 year guarantee to show our commitment to our products. As we have been in business for nearly 100 years, it's a guarantee that we can commit to. We actually hand make our furniture here in Britain rather than import it.

What would you rather do, spend £700 on a set that you will need to replace every couple of years, or buy our furniture that will last you a lifetime of enjoyment?

Our Solid Teak and Oak furniture is designed to be kept uncovered outdoors in all weathers. Over time our furniture will age and turn a stunning silver colour. Many people who own a piece of our furniture love the rustic natural colours that come with time, however if you prefer your furniture to maintain looking like new we would advise cleaning and oiling your furniture once a year. The colour change will not affect the structure of the bench and you will be able to enjoy the different spectrum of colours and your bench for decades to come.

Hello everyone today the 10th March with SPRING around the corner ( Silly me, I have just sent out our Spring Newsletter – please click here if you would like a copy ) and guess what it's SNOWING!!
They say England is a green and pleasant land, well someone did. Nowadays I'm not sure if we have global warming, global freezing or global flooding. Hang on yes I am, it's the whole lot usually each and every day!!

I do not know about all you lovely people out there in our cold and winter land, but we just have to be classed as one of mother natures greatest survivors. Banks, Governments, MP's all doing as they please, the Weather, Horsemeat, caught fish all being dumped back into the sea ( go for it Hugh ) Education and the Health Service all going backwards ( my opinion ) HOW DO WE SURVIVE??

Looking out of my office window I have Robins, Blue, Great, Coal and Long Tailed Tits, Gold Finches, Song Thrushes, Blackbirds, Pigeons, Jays, Magpies, Crow sitting on top of the Apple tree, Yellow Hammers, Pheasants and English Partridges all eagerly tucking in to the Niger seeds, Peanuts, Fat Balls, Wheat and the special finch mix all liberally supplied. A large log fire roaring in the hearth and a mug of good old Yorkshire Tea – BLISS?

Now despite all the adversities we face at www.teakgardenfurniture.co.uk and www.memorialbenches.org you may find the odd little bit of something nice. Will you be changing your garden furniture this year? Creating a special spot in the garden? Putting in a pond? Laying a new Patio? Or purchasing a Handmade Memorial Bench to commemorate a special loved one? If it's a yes to any or indeed if only considering please feel free to call for advice, help or indeed any information you might need. What we don't know we can find for you – all part of our commitment to provide you with a really special, personal experience.

Our Bespoke Handmade furniture is generally regarded as the most substantial on the market today and having been around since 1923 we do at last!! Know what we are doing. HAPPY GARDENING.

WELCOME to the Spring 2013 Newsletter from Teak Garden Furniture.

Spring officially starts Wednesday 20 March 2013, only a few weeks away and we are busily preparing for the start of the season.

Landscaping and outdoor recreation has become a popular trend and the desire for furniture to sit, relax and enjoy the space has followed.

Teak Garden Furniture provides a wide range of designs, from simple and elegant to stylish and contemporary. We are promoting a series of mix and match furniture sets to welcome the arrival of Spring. Tailored to suit modest budgets, without comprising quality, there is a selection of folding tables and chairs to choose from, fully assembled

Why Choose Teak?

  • Teak wood construction allows teak patio sets to last years longer than other patio sets.
  • Teak does not need to be protected. It is a unique wood that if left in its natural state is almost maintenance free.
  • It can be left outside all year round, surviving the elements. Therefore, it is considered the ideal choice for garden furniture.
  • If left untreated, over time teak will turn a silvery grey. This is a cosmetic process and will not harm or affect the strength, durability or quality of the wood.
